If you like interior design and cheap furniture, use Facebook and haven’t come across “The Shop of Little Things,” you probably live under a rock. This hidden Facebook group, which now has over eighty-five thousand followers, can help you find literally any piece of furniture on the planet. Brainchild by Rafia Anns, a Lahore-based interior and furniture designer, “The Shop of Little Things” is all about the interior and more. Perhaps it is this space in Pakistan that can design everything outside of Pinterest and the internet and turn ideas into reality.

This journey began two years ago when Rafia found herself designing ten rooms for a guesthouse. She decided to design and produce the furniture herself instead of outsourcing it, which helped her understand furniture and build a portfolio. The next step was to create a Facebook group, put your creations there, and invite friends and family. Rafia’s vision was different – she wanted to bring innovation in furniture to Pakistan. She wanted to experiment with bright colors, add sparkle and funk to the design, and create furniture that looked chic and elegant.

Speaking about her design process, she mentioned that aesthetics, color, durability and cost effectiveness are always on her mind. “I like to use bright colors because they are the most popular to people, they are bright in the summer and can be toned down with a throw or pillow for the gray winter months.”

Most of Rafia’s furniture is chic and young. Although she can create complex traditional pieces, but it is expensive and the surest way to brighten up a space is to use innovative pieces. One of the most sought-after pieces these days are the log tables and Rafia made a lot of them at “The Shop of Little Things,” but the space has a lot more than the log tables.

Asked about textures, Rafia said velvet is the safest bet for chairs and sofas. “Velvet is beautiful in all colors; it is durable and long lasting and gives a very regal finish and a neat appearance. While she recommends a solid color and velvet for the sofas and chairs, she also believes that using quirky, chic, and bright cushions can really turn any sofa or chair into a statement piece. She adds that attractive cushions are a great way to change up the look of existing chairs and sofas around the house.

According to her, when designing a home, keep subtle shades and colors for bedrooms and brighter colors for living spaces. When clients come to Rafia, she advises on shades like royal blue, brown, mustard and emerald green for the living room while neutral color undertones like beige and gray for the bedrooms.

Besides the color, the print is also very important and although Rafia recommends using a solid color fabric, she likes to experiment with statement prints every now and then. For example, she uses black and white stripes and complements them with bright colors. For example, if the back of a chair is striped, the front will be a bright color like red, yellow, or green. Likewise, she also uses a combination of flowers and plains and it works wonderfully.

Rafia thinks that certain elements play a big role in the interior and the general appearance of a place. “Furniture and accessories like rugs and paintings are two of those things. Putting together bright, vibrant furniture or a striking rug or painting can instantly add a cheerful aura to any dull space.

For Rafia, investing in new furniture isn’t the only way to change the look of a space. According to her, there are several other options; existing furniture can also be redone. “The cost of redoing is much cheaper; the same cabinet base can be used to rearrange the whole look. Besides, investing in pieces like a new carpet, paint, planters, and plants can also completely change the mood.

Speaking of art, Rafia said that you don’t have to invest too much if you can’t afford it. “The beauty of art is that it doesn’t have to be expensive because it’s all relative and priceless. If someone is creative they can paint themselves because it is a great activity and it helps to relax. Otherwise, there are a lot of amateur and aspiring artists doing brilliant work.

Likewise, Rafia also agrees that plants play a big role in the overall design and appearance of any place. She recommends adding plants to a living space or common room when you want a change of look without investing in new furniture. Since most of us spend a lot of time at home due to our 40s, bringing in a few plants is also a great way to get close to nature while staying at home. “We have great planter options designed for indoors to complement the neat and organized vibe. These planters give plants the appearance of centerpieces in any room.
